PODCASTS

These podcast episodes have been created through a series of commissions and collaborations, developed in response to place-based ideas, histories, and influences across Great Yarmouth and the wider Norfolk landscape.

Blending sound, story, and local knowledge, they reflect the layered character of this coastal region and the creative voices rooted within it. Each series offers a different way of listening to place — through field recordings, conversations, music, and lived experience.

Ear of the Edgeland

Ear of the Edgeland is a four-part podcast series that tunes into Norfolk’s landscapes, histories, and voices through sound. Each episode blends music, field recordings, and conversations with local artists, writers, and thinkers — from the watery edges of the Broads to Sebald’s haunting coastal routes. Produced by Eastern Ear, the series was made in collaboration with Original Projects, who supported community engagement and hosted public listening events in Great Yarmouth.

The episodes are:

1. Broadsound – A journey through the Broads with writer Mark Cocker and poet Jean McNeil.

2. Breydonsound – A reflection on Breydon Water’s social history with painter Bruer Tidman and writer Sarah Lowndes.

3. Sebaldsound – A conversation about W.G. Sebald’s East Anglian landscapes with curator Nick Warr and artist Guy Moreton.

4. Albionsound – A final sonic exploration capturing the shifting sense of place along the East Coast.

YARMONICS SOUND MAP 

YARMONICS Sound Map

The YARMONICS Sound Map is an evolving archive of open-source audio that captures the unique textures of Great Yarmouth through field recordings and live performances. The map invites listeners to explore the town through sound — from ambient street scenes and coastal atmospheres to experimental music performed in unexpected places.

The map is both a creative resource and a public archive — open to all, and continually growing. It invites participation, documentation, and discovery, offering a sonic portrait of place in flux.

NEW HISTORIES

New Histories
initiated by East Contemporary Visual Arts Network (ECVAN)

This pilot project funded by Arts Council England, was designed to uncover diverse regional histories across the East of England. It project brought together four regional art organisations — Art Exchange (University of Essex, Colchester), Focal Point Gallery (Southend), originalprojects; (Great Yarmouth), and Wysing Arts Centre (Cambridgeshire) — each commissioning new work in response to stories submitted by the public, offering fresh perspectives on local histories.

In Great Yarmouth, originalprojects; led the local commission and invited six artists to develop new work in response to community-submitted stories and the town’s layered social histories. The commissioned artists were:

Each artist brought a distinctive practice — spanning sound, performance, writing, moving image, and socially engaged approaches — to reflect on themes of place, identity, memory, and resistance within Great Yarmouth’s past and present.

NEW GEOGRAPHIES

New Geographies
Commissioned by ECVAN / Arts Council England

As part of the region-wide New Geographies programme, we were proud to host a major commission by artist Ian Giles, developed in response to a public nomination for Great Yarmouth. Funded by Arts Council England and coordinated by East Contemporary Visual Arts Network (ECVAN), the project invited artists to explore overlooked or underrepresented sites across the East of England — shifting the focus away from the familiar to places of personal and social significance.

Working closely with us and the wider community, Ian Giles created a new film exploring queer histories and safe spaces in rural and coastal areas. Rooted in dialogue and collaboration, the project involved conversations with LGBTQ+ individuals across the region, amplifying voices often left out of dominant historical narratives. His work brought new visibility to experiences of queerness in places like Great Yarmouth — simultaneously specific and widely resonant.

New Geographies offered an important opportunity to reflect on who gets to shape the stories of place, and what it means to centre lived experience in how we map our surroundings. We were delighted to support Ian’s thoughtful, generous, and timely contribution to this wider conversation.
